- Over the last three years, the SOCIMI has driven a 53% reduction in water consumption in Bahía Plaza (Cádiz), the reduction of 42% of waste in La Fira (Reus) and the reduction of 9% of energy consumption in Thader (Murcia)
- These actions are part of SILICIUS’ CSR strategic plan, that seeks to make its business success sustainable and generate a positive impact on the environment where it operates
Madrid, January 31, 2023. SILICIUS Real Estate, SOCIMI specialized in the management of long-term properties with stable rents, is committed to sustainable energy consumption and waste management in its shopping centres. On the celebration on January 28 of the World Day of Action against Global Warming, also called World Day for the Reduction of CO2 Emissions, the SOCIMI has summarised the results achieved in terms of sustainability in the shopping centres it owns.
The measures adopted by SILICIUS Real Estate in recent years to improve the efficiency of its assets has allowed the SOCIMI (Spanish REIT) move towards more sustainable water consumption, energy and waste management.
Thus, with respect to the first issue, Bahía Plaza Shopping Centre (Cádiz) has reduced its water consumption by 53%, during the last three years, making it more efficient. In energy matters, to name another area, the shopping centres La Fira (Reus) and Thader (Murcia) have achieved a reduction in energy consumption of 14% and 9%, respectively.
La Fira, for example, has photovoltaic and solar thermal installations, aimed at the use of renewable energies for the generation of energy and production of hot water. The photovoltaic plant supposes a production of electrical energy for self-consumption very important and with environmental impact; and the solar thermal installation heats the water of the circuit that supplies a large part of the facilities.
The water savings achieved thanks to photovoltaic energy is equivalent to 167,586 cubic metres (67 Olympic swimming pools), and the sum of the energy produced by the installation could supply 8,539 homes. In addition, this asset has the BREEAM® ES In Use certificate with the distinction of “Very Good”, distinctive that proves the environmental sustainability of both the La Fira building and its management.
In turn, in terms of waste management, the measured data also point towards greater efficiency in this area. To mention more examples, La Fira shopping centre generated 42.5% less waste during 2022 than in 2019; while in Bahía Plaza they recycled 27.7% more last year than the previous year.
Juan Diaz de Bustamante, Managing Director of SILICIUS Real Estate, highlighted that from the company “we are aware of the need for our shopping centres, like the rest of our assets, to operate every time more sustainable”. “Although we still have some way to go, we are making great progress, monitoring the activity of each centre and measuring a series of indicators in all of them, to make our portfolio more sustainable little by little”, underlined the general director of SILICIUS.
This commitment of the SOCIMI to advance in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability is part of SILICIUS’ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategic plan, that aspires to make its business success sustainable and generate a positive impact on the environment. With this plan, the company reaffirms its commitment to the environment, society and corporate governance, working to generate impacts that serve as a boost for the environmental development of the regions.
